Wolverhampton is situated northwest of Birmingham, and is the second largest area of the West Midlands. In the county of Staffordshire, Wolverhampton has beautiful countryside to the north and west.
Wolverhampton was founded in 985 when the Anglo Saxon King Aethelred made a grant of land to Lady Wulfruna. Many buildings here are still named after the Lady and people from the area often affectionately known as Wolves or Wolvos. Lady Wulfruna founded a monastery which in 1425 became the site for St Peter’s Church where a statue of her can still be seen.
Wolverhampton had built up a trade in wool and was a bustling market town by the 13th Century. The importance of the wool trade is reflected in the city’s coat of arms.
By the 16th Century, Wolverhampton was also known for working and trading in brass and iron, particularly in the making of locks and keys. The well known firm of Charles and Jeremiah Chubb set up here in 1818.
